For an exceptional way to unwind, consider diving or snorkeling amid Indonesia's world-famous coral reefs, which offer both adventure and relaxation. The soothing motion of the waves, the absolute absence of sound – just your breath – while exploring underwater worlds lets you focus on the sea creatures and the  brightly colored and fascinatingly shaped coral in front of you, and nothing else. There are great dive resorts in and islands along the Indonesian archipelago of Raja Ampat. Let me plan a diving experience that will rival anything you’ve seen in the world.

How about taking a dip in the cenotes of the Yucatan Peninsula? These natural pools, formed by the collapse of porous limestone, unveil hidden underground water reservoirs, and were much revered by the Mayans centuries ago. Near Tulum, look for Cenote Dos Ojos, which features two connected pools, or head to the Instagram favourite - Cenote Samulá, near Valladolid on the Yucatan Peninsula.

Hiking or kayaking on Vancouver Island is another excellent way to unwind as you breathe in the clean air of old-growth forests. Explore Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park to encounter towering 300-foot spruce trees and ancient cedars over 1,000 years old. Trails range from brief walks to extensive day hikes. Just remember to gear up for mud and bring your rain equipment – after all, this rainforest lives up to its name!
